My name is Ngozi I started my weightloss journey in April 2014. At the time I weighed 85kg and desperately needed to loose weight for personal reasons so I made up my mind and was committed to it.

Should women always look good for their men or themselves?

I personally believe that a woman should look good and be healthy for herself first and that's what makes her attractive to her boyfriend/spouse.

Staying healthy is about you feeling great and loving yourself enough to be the best you. So yes it works both ways, look good for yourself and stay attractive for your man if you are in a relationship.

There are no nutrients in Fibre!

Recently you hear people say eat this because it is rich in fibre.

The purpose of juicing fruits and vegetables.

When I say juicing fruits I do not refer to your packed juices or canned, what I mean are fresh fruit and vegetables either squeezed or blended.  By extracting the juice from the fruits and veggies then drinking it immediately you will provide nutrients to the cellular level of your body more quickly and with less loss of energy than any other method. Juices are essential for internal cleansing and health restoration. What we need to realize is that the juice content of most fruits and vegetables is where the nutrients are found.

Amazing uses of baking soda!

We would think this ordinary substance popular known and used among bakers would have so little to offer but to our amazement it does far more than causing your cake to rise.

For instance baking soda or sodium bicarbonate ph levels either in acid or alkaline substances it has a neutralizing effect.  It is also perfect for neutralizing acid odor and maintaining a neutral pH.

Baking soda is a good exfoliator and face scrub it is tender on the skin so it can be used everyday and it removes dead cells as well as toxins, just add three parts baking soda two parts water you will get a paste like mix. It can also be used a teeth whitening agent if applied to you toothpaste and used three times a week.

Its also eases heart burn and indigestion if you add a tea spoon to a glass of water and drink.

Have a great lunch like pounded yam and vegetable soup

Ingredients.

Yam is a great cellfood and an alkaline food. 100 g of yam  provides 118 calories. it is composed of complex carbohydrates and soluble dietary fibre making it a great source for energy. It contains small amounts of vitamin-A, and carotenes which converts to vitamin A in the body. Both these compounds are strong antioxidants. Vitamin A has many functions like maintaining healthy mucus membranes and skin, night vision, growth and protection from lung and oral cavity cancers.

Ukazi leaves are high in dietary fibre, water leaves are also high in fibre, antioxidants, iron and rich in vitamin C, ugwu leaves rich in iron, lowers cholesterol, anti bacterial and boosts the immune system.

You can also see some kpomo as I am trying to avoid meat these days, dry fish, cray fish, palm oil and see salt.

Do not over cook your vegetables because it reduces the potency, always watch your portions.

What about water retention?

Whenever I tell people drink lots of water they often ask 'What about water retention' as though it is beyond control so I did some research to provide us with answers and solutions.

Causes of water retention can be natural reaction to hot water, medication containing estrogen, hormonal changes during menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause, physical inactivity, congestive heart failure, lack of protein, thyroid disease, malnutrition or bad diet.

The problem can be controlled by reducing salt intake and increasing potassium consumption because sodium draws water into the body and potassium excretes it. Potassium can be gotten from fruits especially bananas, vegetables, fish, nuts and seeds. Still drink lots of water because water improves the kidneys function, increase your level of physical activity by exercising.

Carrot is a Vitamin A power house and has a lot of health points.

Carrots are rich in vitamin A by 428%, it is also called a vitamin A power house not only that is has ample supply of vitamin C, D, E and K. Here are some list benefits of this vegetable.

Antioxidants prevent and help the body fight things like heart diseases, eye problems, mood and muscular disorders and immune system problems.

Best source of antioxidants are raw vegetables and fruits.

Know your body type and how it applies to you and your weight loss or weight gain.

Ectomorph: This is your regular skinny person who never adds weight no matter what they eat. I am sure we have some friends like this. They are lean built, has little muscle and no body fat. they alway have trouble gaining weight. But if they choose to build muscle or gain weight, they will have to do heavy muscle training, do little cardio and consume more calories than they burn.

Endomorph: this is really common,  heavy built, gains weight easily and struggles to loose body fat like myself. To maintain a healthy weight balance we must burn more calories than we consume. A vigorous work out regime, exercise for 4 to 5 times a week. Also do lots of cardio like jogging for 30 minutes daily. Eat 5 small meals a day each meal should comprise of mostly lean protein and green vegetables remember everything you chew on is a meal. Avoid regular junk food like sweets, soda etc.

Mesomorph: This is the ideal body build. Easy to gain if he chooses and easy to loose. This body type is great for body building.

Every one has a combination but each individual predominantly leans towards one, so find you and enjoy your weight loss or weight gain.

For all the plantain lovers out there like myself! This is the difference between ripe and unripe plantain.

Benefits of unripe plantain.

Unripe plantain has high resistant starch content for anyone trying to avoid foods with high sugar. Especially people with type 2 diabetes unripe plantain is a great choice for you . But it is low in antioxidants because the level of antioxidant increases as the plantain ripens, it also causes some bloating and gas due to starch.

Benefits of ripe plantain

Ripe plantain is rich in vitamin A, C and minerals such as potassium. It is easier to digest because it is high in fibre, has higher levels of antioxidants. They also have anti cancer qualities and help immunity enhancement which combats abnormal cells. Overly ripe plantains are not advised to be eaten as some minerals diminish in that state.

Ripe plantain is more alkaline than unripe.

What does it take to burn a 0.45kg/1pound of fat in 3 weeks? According to this Havard piblication it is counting and burning calories.

These are some tips to help you reach your weight loss goal
It takes roughly 3,500 additional calories spent in physical activity to burn a pound of fat.
Walking or jogging uses up roughly 100 calories per mile. (Note: Your actual calorie expenditure depends on a number of factors, including your weight and pace.)
You’ll shed approximately a pound of fat for every 35 miles you walk, assuming your levels of food intake and other physical activity remain the same.
If you walk briskly (at a pace of 4 mph) for half an hour on five out of seven days, you’ll log 10 miles a week. At the end of three-and-a-half weeks, it’s possible to lose 0.45kg/1 pound if the number of calories you consume stays the same.
If you also cut back on the amount of food you eat by a few hundred calories a day, you can hasten the pace of your weight loss.
At the end of the day eating healthy and making better food choices with exercise, helps you achieve your weight loss goals.

Should Ulcer patients avoid milk?

Milk, alcohol, coffee including decaf, carbonated beverages, hot peppers, processed foods, salty and red meat and deep fries are foods ulcer patients should avoid.

On the subject of milk many ulcer patients are told to drink milk but researchers found it to increase stomach acid secretion and some researchers in the eighties also found out that it actually delays  the healing of duodenal ulcers.

Mistakes we make on our weight loss journey.

Do not miss breakfast: Eat breakfast that are high in fibre and protein because they help curb hunger

Keep track of snacks: Never say a snack is not food. We must be aware that every food, snack, gum, biscuits, sweets, ice cream  and nibbles have calories and will always increase our regular calorie intake.

Do not load up a lot of low fat calorie foods, always portion your food.

Drinks contain calories too: Whether, Coke, Fanta, Sprite, Ribenna, Lucozade boost or sport cocktails, beer and spirits be mindful of your intake.

Drink a lot of water.
